Apple could bring a premium pair of AirPods Pro 2 later this year. That’s according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his latest PowerOn newsletter. Gurman corroborates rumors that the second generation AirPods Pro are in the works and the company could launch the device in 2022.
The AirPods Pro were first released three years ago, so we can expect a refresh. “The current model has been on the market since fall 2019, so batteries are likely already struggling for some early adopters,” Gurman noted in the newsletter.
While not much is known about the second-generation AirPods, sketchy rumors suggest the new model will likely feature a sleeker stemless design, a new charging case, and fitness capabilities. A recent rumor claims that the next-gen AirPods Pro could support lossless audio. The current-generation AirPods Pro brought features like active noise cancellation and a customizable fit to Apple’s high-end headphones.
AirPods debuted in 2007, alongside the iPhone 7 in 2017. Since then, AirPods have become the most popular truly wireless headphones on the market. The AirPods lineup includes entry-level AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.
Gurman also expects Apple to release the AirPods Max in new colors in the coming months. While an update to the over-ear headphones isn’t imminent, Gurman hopes to see a price drop for the existing model. The AirPods Max have been praised for their audio quality, but reviewers have criticized Apple for charging $549 for the over-ear boxes. Apple was rumored to introduce a $399 AirPods Max last year, but we haven’t heard anything substantial about the lower-end model.
