Apple iPhone SE Plus Release Date, Rumors, Specs, Features

(Pocket-lint) – The Apple iPhone SE was announced on 15 April 2020. It’s essentially the iPhone 8 in terms of design, with the same aluminum and glass construction. And by all accounts, it has been extremely popular as it is an ideal replacement for those who want a new iPhone with home button to replace an aging model.

Since its launch nearly two years ago, rumors have continued to surface about an iPhone SE Plus. Some suggest it will be a larger model of the iPhone SE (2020) with a bigger screen, while others suggest the Plus refers to a spec upgrade and added 5G capabilities.

We’ve rounded up all the speculation surrounding the upcoming Apple iPhone SE. Here’s everything we know so far.

Release date

  • March 8, 2022
  • A bigger iPhone SE in 2024?

The next iPhone SE has been rumored for quite some time now, pretty much ever since the second generation appeared. It was first claimed that a “Plus” model would appear towards the end of 2020, which later moved to 2021. Of course, nothing happened.

More recently, the timeline shifted to the first half of 2022, with multiple rumors and sources suggesting that the next iPhone SE – whether it’s called iPhone SE (2022), iPhone SE Plus or just third-generation iPhone SE – will appear in March or April 2022. The most recent report claims that March 8 is the day to note in the diary.

Apple usually holds a spring event in March, while it will also be two years since the second-generation iPhone SE appeared, so it’s reasonable to think that the next iPhone SE could arrive around then. It’s also claimed that a larger iPhone SE could arrive in 2024.

Design

According to rumors, the next iPhone SE will offer a similar design to the current iPhone SE (2020). It looks like the Touch ID button will remain below the screen and this screen will remain the same size as the previous model.

The second-generation iPhone SE has a similar design to the iPhone 8 – as we mentioned – with rounded edges and a glass back. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see the next iPhone SE line up with the rest of Apple’s portfolio, including the iPhone 13 series, but so far no renders or images have leaked.

Display

The current Apple iPhone SE (2020) has a 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels. Any larger version of the SE would sit between that iPhone and the 6.1-inch iPhone 13, but that model is said to not appear until 2024.

Instead, the next iPhone SE is supposed to come with the same 4.7-inch screen as the iPhone SE (2020), along with Touch ID on the bottom, differentiating it from the iPhone 13 mini.

The next iPhone SE will no doubt have True Tone so that the display adapts to ambient conditions to give you the best visuals, along with support for Dolby Vision as well as HDR10. It’s unlikely to offer the 120Hz refresh rate found on the iPhone 13 Pro models.

Cameras

  • Same as iPhone 13?
  • Portrait Mode, Portrait Lighting, Smart HDR
  • Video capture up to 4K 60fps

As of now, there are no rumors detailing what camera capabilities the upcoming iPhone SE will offer. There’s a single camera on the iPhone SE 2020. It uses the same sensor as the iPhone 8 but with the smarts of the iPhone 11.

It’s possible that a next-gen iPhone SE will have a dual camera like the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, especially if it has the same chipset, but for now that’s a guess.

What we expect are features like Smart HDR, 4K video capture and night mode.

Hardware and Specifications

  • Apple A15 Bionic
  • 64/128/256 GB storage
  • Wireless charging
  • 5G

The Apple iPhone SE (2020) runs on the Apple A13 Bionic platform, which is the same chip that powers the iPhone 11. The next iPhone SE is rumored to sport the A15 chip under its hood, putting it on par with the iPhone 13 in terms of power. It is said to also offer 5G, which should make it the cheapest 5G iPhone.

Storage options are expected to continue at 64/128/256GB – the same as the current model – although no rumors have detailed these yet. Apple may be ditching the 64GB model in favor of a 128GB boot option like it did with the iPhone 13, but that’s unclear at this time.

Like the iPhone SE, the next-generation iPhone SE will undoubtedly support wireless charging, fast charging, Wi-Fi 6 and dual SIM support via eSIM.
