Apple Watch Continues to Sell Well Despite Market Slowdown; AirPods sales stagnate amid growing competition

Over the past few years, Apple has succeeded in establishing a broad portfolio of wearable products and it’s safe to say that Apple’s smartwatches – Apple Watch and Apple’s true wireless headphones – AirPods have set a standard of industry due to their popularity. According to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC), the wearables market is in decline, but the Cupertino tech giant has shown a rising number when it comes to its smartwatches – Apple Watch.

Is the wearable market in decline?

There is a drop in the number of wearables buyers in the market, as the IDC report indicates. IDC adds that there could be several factors supporting this decline: rising inflation, fears surrounding recession, etc. The ready-to-wear market hasn’t shrunk in ages — it’s seen hyper growth over the past two years that was always going to be “tough to sustain,” IDC said. The report further claims that shipments fell 6.9% year-over-year to 107.4 million units.

Rising inflation and falling demand for the product could be one of the factors driving the data, however, growth will return in 2023 as demand for watches and headphones is expected to pick up again , according to IDC.

Apple Watch takes the top spot

According to IDC, Apple grew 6.6% year over year, mainly due to its performance. Apple reportedly shipped over 2 million units of Apple Watch SE, according to IDC. IDC says that’s a good thing for a device that’s over a year and a half old. International Data Corp didn’t talk about the number of AirPods, but did mention that AirPods shipments were flat in the quarter as the company faced increased competition from low-cost products.

Additionally, IDC adds that Apple remains the top company in the market as it held over 30.5% market share with 32.1 million shipments in Q2 2022. Apple remains number one, followed by Samsung , Xiaomi, Huawei and Imagine Market.
