A few gifts I gave to my parents had a memorable impact. But there is only one practical gift that I gave them that they still actively talk about.

I first bought my dad the Belkin MagSafe 3-in-1 Wireless Charger for his desk, but on his next birthday he was asking for another one for his nightstand. After using it a few times, my mom picked up my dad’s first edition, and they now both have one on their bedside tables.

Belkin MagSafe 3-in-1 wireless charger, $144.99

This multitasking charging station is one of the best designs I’ve seen and got a ton of rave reviews (including from my tech-savvy parents). This charger can simultaneously charge your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, it doesn’t take up much space and costs less than $150 – basically, it’s a win-win-win.

This sleek design is wireless and takes advantage of MagSafe technology. Place your devices in their respective slots and the magnetic modules will secure them. Although it’s a bit of an investment, quickly charging all your everyday devices in one place without extra cords is definitely worth it.

According to its product description, this charger is compatible with all iPhone 12, 13, and 14 models and all Apple Watch and AirPods with MagSafe cases. And Amazon shoppers have given it over 3,000 five-star ratings.

One happy customer said, “I found myself using this charger daily and even taking it out of town and on vacation. It’s a must-have for me because of its convenience and usefulness. Another called it “the last home charger you’ll ever need”.

Apple and Samsung headphones, compared Sun, 18 Sep 2022 00:00:00 +0000

Apple’s latest entry into the premium headphones category is the Airpods Pro 2, and they go up against a number of heavyweights, including Samsung’s Galaxy Buds 2 Pro. While Samsung took a little over a year to announce a sequel to the Galaxy Buds Pro, Apple took three years to announce a successor to the AirPods Pro. The new AirPods Pro 2 are Apple’s premium headphones, sitting above the AirPods 3 and AirPods 2.

The AirPods Max do not yet have a successor and remain the most expensive model in the AirPods line. It was reported that Apple would announce new colors for the headphones this year, but that didn’t happen during the “Far Out” event. Apple still has a launch event to hold before the end of the year, so there’s still time to make an announcement.

The AirPods Pro 2 and Galaxy Buds 2 Pro have very different designs. The former has stems while the latter does not. However, they both have an in-ear design with replaceable silicone tips. Just like the original AirPods Pro, the AirPods Pro 2 are rated IPX4 for sweat and water resistance, which is lower than the IPX7 rating of Samsung’s headphones. However, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro case has no water resistance while the AirPods case is rated IPX4. Apple has managed to keep the weight of the 2nd generation AirPods Pro to 5.3 grams while the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro weigh 5.4 grams per earbud. Unsurprisingly, the Apple Earbuds can only be purchased in white, while the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are available for purchase in Graphite, White, and Bora Purple.

AirPods Pro 2 have better battery life

AirPods Pro 2 feature custom drivers and amplifiers that work with the new H2 chip for advanced audio performance. The H2 chip plus powerful new algorithms help AirPods Pro 2 better cancel unwanted noise when ANC is on. According to Apple, the ANC is twice as good as on the previous generation. The chip is also responsible for the AirPods Pro 2’s adaptive transparency, which reduces the intensity of unwanted sounds like sirens and construction tools, even when transparency mode is enabled. Apple has also improved Spatial Audio by allowing users to create a custom spatial audio profile based on the shape and size of their head and ears.

The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, on the other hand, have a dual speaker system consisting of 10mm woofers and 5.3mm tweeters. Samsung claims the earphones feature Smart ANC, which helps to better cancel out background noise during calls and reading. Smart ANC also works with a feature called Voice Detect which knows when the user is talking and proceeds to turn off ANC, turn on Ambient Mode and lower playback volume so conversations are more clear. Once the user stops speaking, it reverts to the previous reading settings. The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro also feature an enhanced version of 360 Audio, which is its own take on spatial audio. Finally, Samsung’s headphones feature a new 24-bit Hi-Fi codec that only works when the headphones are connected to a Samsung device.

Both headphones have Bluetooth 5.3. AirPods Pro 2 connect seamlessly to Apple products and automatically switch audio between devices signed into the same account. Samsung also offers a similar experience when the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are connected to other Samsung devices, including its Galaxy Book PCs. There’s also Find My support for both headphones (and even Precision Find for the AirPods Pro 2 case). In terms of battery life, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro have five hours of battery life on a single charge and 18 hours with ANC. However, with ANC off, battery life is eight hours on a single charge and 29 hours total with the charging case. On the other hand, the AirPods Pro 2 have a battery life of six hours with ANC activated and a total of 30 hours with the case. Both headphones support both wireless charging and wired charging, but while Samsung uses a USB-C port, Apple sticks with the Lightning port.

Unlike Samsung, Apple hasn’t raised the price of the AirPods Pro 2, which are still priced at $249 like the previous generation. However, they are still more expensive than the $229 Galaxy Buds 2 Pro. Much like their predecessors, Samsung and Apple headphones work best in their own ecosystems. Pairing Galaxy Buds 2 with an Apple device or AirPods Pro 2 with a Samsung device (or Android device) will only provide basic functionality. Therefore, while iPhone users should stick to the Airpods Pro 2Android users will benefit from using the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro.

Bose QuietComfort II headphones

Apple AirPods Pro 2 aren’t the only next-gen headphones launching this month. Today, Bose launched the QuietComfort Earbuds II, the next iteration of the popular Bose QuietComfort headphones (a CBS Essentials bestseller). The new headphones promise better sound and better active noise cancellation, in a much smaller size than the bulkier first generation.

What else is new in the Bose QuietComfort II headphones? The latest generation of Bose headphones offer longer battery life thanks to an improved charging case. Another new feature: Bluetooth 5.3 compatibility, with a range of 30 feet.

Bose products are known for their excellent sound quality, and the new Bose QuietComfort II headphones are no exception. They claim to offer the best active noise cancellation in the world and have a new CustomTune technology that automatically adjusts the music to the taste of your ears. They also have “aware mode” which pauses noise cancellation when you need to hear your surroundings.

If you didn’t like the bulk of the original Bose QuietComfort headphones, there’s good news: the QuietComfort II headphones are a third smaller than their predecessor. They’re also water and sweat resistant, so you can wear them to the gym.

The Bose QuietComfort II earphones offer six hours of battery life on a single charge and come with a charging case that holds three additional charges (24 hours of battery life in total). You can control music, answer calls, and adjust volume just by tapping on your headphones instead of having to use your phone. These Bluetooth 5.3 compatible headphones are available in black and soapstone.
