LEXINGTON, Kentucky (September 21, 2022) — In recognition of its strong commitment to student success, the University of Kentucky’s STEM Through Authentic Research and Training (START) program was awarded the Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) Golden Apple Award.

The Golden Apple Award recognizes high-performing programs and organizations that partner with FCPS to advance education and mentorship opportunities for students in the community. Members of the UK START program received the award on Wednesday, September 14 at the FCPS State of the Schools Address event.

“It’s a fantastic honor for the program and the efforts of everyone involved,” said Luke Bradley, Ph.D., acting chairman and professor of neuroscience at the UK College of Medicine. “We wouldn’t be here without the support of others and partnerships across campus and with the community.

The UK START program is a collaboration between UK colleges and local organizations to improve pathways to college for first-generation and traditionally underrepresented students. The program emphasizes introducing students early to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by integrating academic, social, and professional experiences.

Faculty and staff involved in the program provide outreach, hands-on experiences, training, and activities in campus labs and connect students with STEM professionals. Since its launch during the COVID-19 pandemic, the program has provided these opportunities to more than 1,200 students in Lexington school systems.

Margaret Mohr-Schroeder, Ph.D., professor of STEM education and associate dean at the UK College of Education, said local K-12 students benefit from living in a community with a major research university. like the UK. This provides opportunities for partnerships designed “to help young people see the possibilities they can pursue”.

“Rich partnerships, such as the START partnership, are important because they actively work to disrupt the systems that make some young people feel like STEM careers aren’t for them or don’t belong,” said Mohr-Schroeder. “This is especially important for populations that are marginalized or traditionally underrepresented in STEM.”

Lordina Mensah, currently an undergraduate student at Lewis Honors College majoring in engineering and STEM education, was introduced to STEM by attending STEM summer camps for elementary, middle and high school students led by Mohr -Schroeder, then continuing through the START program in high school. She will continue her involvement in the program as a quasi-peer mentor for future START students.

“I want to become a STEM engineer and educator to introduce and support minority and underrepresented children in STEM,” Mensah said. “I want to give back to the community that has supported me throughout my journey.”

START program students have the unique experience of being both a near-peer participant and leader for other students.

“This program is not just about empowering students; it’s about showing students that they are valued members of the STEM community. They have a lot to contribute, including “paying it forward” to future generations,” Bradley said. “While we see strong growth in the number of students exposed to STEM experiences, when we add close peer mentoring, that’s when we see students flourish.”

The START program is housed in the UK College of Medicine’s Department of Neuroscience and is led by faculty and staff from the College of Medicine, the College of Education and the Department of Transformative Learning’s Integrated Success Coaching. It is funded by a five-year, $1.3 million Science Education Partnership Award from the National Institutes of Health.

Local organizations involved in UK START include FCPS, Lexington Academies, STEAM Academy, The Learning Center, the Kentucky-West Virginia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program, Higher Orbits and Space Tango, a Lexington-based STEM society.

NYC Mayor Adams Says Migrants Busted From Texas Could Be Hosted On Cruise Ships Mon, 19 Sep 2022 16:10:08 +0000

The mayor of New York has declared a “humanitarian crisis” in his city after 2,500 migrants were bused into the Big Apple and floods of people poured into Texas every day.

Eric Adams has revealed migrants arriving in New York could be accommodated on Norwegian cruise ships as he plans to take legal action against Governor Abbott amid the spiraling migrant problem in the country.

He is also planning to take legal action against the governor of the Lone Star State as thousands of immigrants continue to be shipped across the country – in many cases, without prior warning.

Republican governors have again escalated the war on immigration in Democratic-run areas by threatening to airlift illegal migrants to President Biden’s home state of Delaware.

Buses and planes full of illegal immigrants have so far arrived in New York, Chicago, Washington DC and Massachusetts from the southern borders.

In a series of scathing interviews, Adams said the severe humanitarian crisis he faced was to some extent caused by “the governors of the southern states”.

At least six buses of asylum seekers arrived in New York from Texas on Sunday – as the city’s shelters reached “breaking point”. A total of more than 11,000 migrants have arrived in the city since May, 2,500 of whom were sent by bus by Governor Abbott.

Eric Adams of New York told CBS2: “Our legal team is looking at the legal challenges we might have with Texas.

A cruise ship is seen in the Hudson River in New York. It’s unclear if Eric Adams has drawn up plans to house migrants on ships like this, but he mentioned it could be an option to deal with the growing crisis.

“We believe we have some options because when you unwittingly put someone on a bus, we believe it’s breaking the law… We’re making every effort to make sure New Yorkers are safe. [not] be treated unfairly.

“We see this as a temporary measure, not a permanent one. A permanent measure is to get people to find housing.

“We need to find temporary measures to solve this problem.”

And Eric Adams revealed to WCBS that his team is considering potentially housing the thousands of people being bussed into the Big Apple on cruise ships.

He added: “We have looked at everything from the legality of using any type of cruise ship to temporary accommodation.”

It comes after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis caused a stir by airlifting 50 Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard in an unannounced attempt to relocate asylum seekers to the exclusive Massachusetts island.

The immigrants were then transported by officials to an army base on Cape Cod.

According to the Democratic mayor, New York’s migrant housing facilities have been pushed to the brink in recent months – with the city having already opened 23 emergency shelters.

Adams said another 38 shelters would need to be created to deal with the growing problem.

Cruise ships were seen as a form of housing for migrants and the homeless under Mike Bloomberg’s administration. However, the plan was never followed through.

It is unclear if any details about cruise ship accommodation have yet been worked out by the Adams administration.

Speaking on ABC on Sunday, Adams added: “This is an American crisis that we have to deal with – a humanitarian crisis that was brought about by human hands, by some of the governors of the southern states.”

It comes as Republicans have stepped up their attacks on the Biden administration as they try to make immigration the theme of November’s midterm elections.

Although the Martha’s Vineyard move was hailed in Republican circles, liberals criticized DeSantis for pulling off what they called a cruel blow that used human lives as pawns in a political game.

Among the critics was President Biden, who said DeSantis was “playing politics with human beings.”

Many have called the situation a humanitarian emergency, while Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker said Martha’s Vineyard – with a population of 15,000 – is “not equipped to provide sustainable housing” for migrants.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also took aim at DeSantis at a press conference, urging other Republicans who disagree with his “plan” to “speak up.”

She said: “It’s a problem and we’ve been clear about it, it’s an inhumane problem, it’s heinous and we shouldn’t use people, migrants, who are fleeing communism as a political pawn. .”

Defending its migrant bus project across the county, Governor Abbott’s office said in a statement Friday, “The bus mission is bringing much-needed relief to our overwhelmed border communities.”

Blackheath Apple Snaps baby shop creates community hub Sat, 17 Sep 2022 10:47:33 +0000 A BLACK Country couple who opened a one-stop baby store as pandemic lockdowns were lifted have brought the community together with their young family business in Blackheath.

Naomi Messer, mum-of-seven, started Apple Snaps as a stall in Blackheath market selling clothes and baby items, but had to close the business due to Covid lockdowns.

Some business owners may have thought twice about returning to a physical store, but Naomi saw an opportunity and, with the help of her husband John, found an empty property in Blackheath High Street.

John, a builder by trade, spent five months renovating the derelict former bank building and the couple, both 40, opened their doors to customers in April as Covid restrictions eased.

Apple and Amazon join growing list of companies to pass on media rights to LIV Golf Thu, 15 Sep 2022 16:15:12 +0000

The list of streaming companies that will air the new LIV Golf series has grown this week.

Amazon and Apple – two of the biggest and newest players in the sports streaming market – have both refused to offer LIV on their platforms, according to The Wall Street Journal. Other companies like ESPN, CBS, NBC and Fox have also previously refused to broadcast the Saudi-backed league, according to the Journal.

It was no surprise that other major networks were carrying LIV — CBS, NBC and ESPN have already struck deals with LIV’s biggest rival, the PGA Tour. But Amazon and Apple have decided not to participate in the upstart Golf Series Matters due to the two companies’ recent foray into live sporting events. Amazon is about to unveil its new “Thursday night football show this week after paying the neighborhood of 100 billion dollars for the NFL game list. Apple, meanwhile, signed a 10-year, $2.5 billion deal to stream Major League Soccer games on Apple TV+ and also airs one “Friday Night Baseball” game per week.

Currently, LIV streams live on Facebook and YouTube and has a global broadcast deal with sports streaming service DAZN. LIV also has agreements with international networks like ServusTV in Germany and Austria and Eleven Sports in Italy.

However, LIV’s reps didn’t seem too concerned about the recent news. CEO Greg Norman told ESPN 1000 Chicago Wednesday that LIV speaks with “four different networks” and that interest in the company “is huge.” An executive also told the Journal that LIV was still negotiating its media rights early and expected to complete a deal by the start of the league’s first full season in 2023.

“We are optimistic about our prospects given our field of players and the quality of our product,” said Will Staeger, chief media officer of LIV Golf, according to the Journal.

LIV recently drawn the winner of the Open Championship 2022 Cameron Smith will join the league which already boasts star golfers like Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson.

Despite the talented workforce, the controversy still revolves around LIV because the series is funded by the Saudi government, which has been accused of countless human rights abuses. Many have claimed the league only exists to fix the world’s view of the Middle Eastern kingdom – also known as ‘sportswashing’ – and even Mickelson described the Saudis as ‘scary’ business partners.

“We know they killed [Washington Post journalist Jamal] Khashoggi and have a horrible human rights record,” Mickelson said. said in February. “They execute people there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it [joining LIV]? Because it’s a unique opportunity to shape how the PGA Tour works. And Saudi money finally gave us that leverage.

months later, Norman brushed off the allegations against the Saudis and said “we all made mistakes”.

The existence of LIV too fractured the sport of golf after the PGA banned the players from the tour if they defected. There are still questions about whether or not LIV golfers will be allowed to play major tournaments like the Masters next year as well.

For now, all US fans of the league can only watch online on Facebook, YouTube or DAZN.

iOS 16 is out tomorrow but your iPhone may miss new features Sun, 11 Sep 2022 07:48:16 +0000

There’s a massive update coming to millions of iPhones tomorrow with Apple confirming that iOS 16 will be available on devices worldwide. This all-new operating system brings some of the biggest changes in years, with users getting a new lock screen, improved messaging, and more comprehensive health features. You can check out all of these updates below, but before you can download iOS 16, you need to make sure your device is compatible.

For the first time in years, Apple is removing some older iPhones from annual updates with a total of five devices not having access to iOS 16. This is likely because the iOS 16 requirements are too high for the older processors that power them. devices.

Unfortunately, if you have an original iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, ‌iPhone‌ 6s Plus, iPhone‌ 7, or iPhone‌ 7 Plus, you’re out of luck and need to upgrade to something newer to get the latest changes.

Anyone with a newer device in their pocket should make sure their phone is fully charged and close to Wi-Fi around 6pm BST. This is usually when Apple releases its iOS updates and we don’t expect 2022 to be any different.

To check if your device is ready to upgrade to iOS 16, simply head to Settings > General > Software Updates.

Apple’s main iOS downloads tend to be large files, so be prepared for a short wait before the installation process completes.

Once everything is updated, here are some of the features that will be available starting tomorrow night.

The main change coming this year is a completely refreshed look of the lock screen. Apple has totally revamped things to make them more customizable with users able to change colors, fonts, and styles. It’s also possible to easily add widgets to the lock screen so you can check the local weather or see the latest football scores without ever unlocking the device.

Sure, most of us have a family photo as our wallpaper, but to make things more interesting, Apple added the option to automatically shuffle favorite snaps from the library onto the device so you get a different look at night than when you wake up.

It’s not just about the lock screen, as Apple is also bringing improved messaging to iOS 16, with users now able to edit texts after they’ve been sent.

This means that any embarrassing typos can be quickly edited, with users given 15 minutes to make changes.

In addition to full editing, there will also be the option to undo a sent message and completely redial it.

The Fitness app has also been updated and can now be used even if you don’t have an Apple Watch with iPhone motion sensors, estimating steps, distance and calories burned.

Another useful health benefit of phones is the ability to track medications. With iOS 16, you can add any tablets you take to the Health app with reminders that then appear when they need to be taken.

Apple’s Upgraded Mail App Has 12 Great Features You’ll Want to Start Using Immediately « iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks Wed, 07 Sep 2022 16:35:14 +0000

If you’re using Apple’s Mail app on your iPhone for iCloud and third-party email accounts, you’re getting a massive update with features we’ve been waiting for years. While there aren’t a colossal number of new features, the latest tools and upgrades are powerful enough to make iOS 16 feel like Mail’s biggest update ever.

One of the new features is the inclusion of a security feature that other email services like AOL, Fastmail, Gmail, and Yahoo already have. Other updates include search improvements, visually rich information, reminders, and productivity options you wish you had sooner.

1. Cancel sending

Just Like Apple’s Messages app, Mail got an unsend feature on iOS 16. When you tap the send button on a draft, you have ten seconds to tap “Unsend to take it back, but you can change that to 20 or 30 seconds if you want a longer delay.

2. Scheduled sending

When you long press the send button in a draft, there are new options to schedule the email to be sent later. You can choose tonight, tomorrow, or a specific date and time. Since Mail takes care of the scheduling, it works with any email account on your device. All scheduled emails are placed in the Send Later folder and you can edit the scheduled time from the unsent email if you need to change it.

3. Tracking

When you email someone a question or request, Mail can remind you to contact that person if they haven’t responded to you yet. You will see a “Follow” button at the top of the sent email. Tapping on it launches a new draft response that you need to fill out and send.

Even better, when Apple’s on-device algorithm detects an email you’ve sent that hasn’t been answered, it puts sent messages at the top of your inbox after a certain amount of time to remind you. Currently, it works in English versions for Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, UK and USA.

You can go to Settings -> Mail -> Follow-up Suggestions to disable the feature.

4. Remind Me

I always forget to reply to incoming emails, so the new Remind Me feature will really help me. In the list of emails, you can swipe the email in question to the right and then tap the clock icon to have the email remind you to check it again in an hour , tonight, tomorrow or for a custom date and time. You can also directly tap the reply button in the email, choose “Remind Me” from the action list, and select an option.

When the time is up, it will appear at the top of your inbox, just like follow-up emails. And in the email, you can “Edit” the date and time if you want to change when Mail reminds you to read it again.

5. More mailboxes

When you tap “Edit” on your primary mailbox list, you can show or hide folders like VIP, Attachments, and Unread. With the new send later, follow up and reminder features in Mail, there are now folders for them too. You may see them appear and disappear automatically from your mailbox list as you use the features, but you can still make them appear from the edit menu.

6. Block senders more easily

On iOS 15, to block the sender of an email from the Mail app, you need to open the email, tap the “From” email address, and choose “Block this contact”. But opening the email is risky if a clever hacker somehow circumvents your account’s script blocking capabilities. Hidden trackers can also be injected into the email, notifying the sender each time the email is opened.

Mail on iOS 16 fixes the problem by letting you block contacts from Quick Actions or the ellipsis menu on the left (•••), where you would then select “Block Sender”.

You can also block a sender from the email. Tap the reply button, then tap “Block sender” from the action list.

7. Alerts for missing recipients and attachments

If you mention an image or file attachment in a draft email but forget to attach it, Mail will now warn you that the attachment is missing. It will point to the line in the email that is linked, asking you to cancel and add the attachment or send the email anyway. It can do the same thing if you mention a contact in your email but forget to include it in one of the recipient fields.

Like Follow Up, this feature works in English versions for Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, United Kingdom, and United States.

8. Rich Link Previews

Mail can now display rich link previews for URLs like the Messages app. When you paste a link, it automatically converts it to a rich preview. If you just want to see the URL, you can tap the preview to highlight it, then tap the drop-down arrow to show the “Convert to Single Link” option.

9. Highlighted Search Terms

When using the search tool to find an email, if a result in the Top Hits section has the search term visible, it will highlight it in yellow to make it stand out. Before, you had to scan the previews yourself.

10. Smart Search Suggestions

When you search for something in Mail, you’ll see improved suggestions. For example, typing “Philadelphia” will suggest related terms found in your emails, and you’ll not only see “Subject contains”, but also “Attachment name contains”.

And it starts as soon as you start typing. So, using the “Philadelphia” example again, you’ll immediately see improved suggestions as you type. For “Phi”, I got contact suggestions and smarter search terms like “phishing” and “Phillips”. Previously, you didn’t see suggested search terms.

Mail […] includes the largest search overhaul and uses state-of-the-art techniques to deliver more relevant, accurate, and comprehensive results. Users see recent emails, contacts, documents, and links as soon as they start searching for emails.

– Apple

11. Smart Search Fixes

Mail will intelligently correct typos if you spell something wrong while searching for email. Additionally, it may include results for synonyms that match your search term. Like tracking and alerts for missing recipients and attachments, this feature works in English versions for Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, UK, and US.

12. BIMI support

The Mail app now digitally verifies emails from brands that use BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) verified brand iconography. You won’t notice anything in your email list, but once you open an authenticated email from a supported brand, you’ll see the brand’s BIMI logo next to the header. When you tap to expand the header, it should say “Digital Certified” with a link to learn more. If you tap on the sender’s name, it should also say it was a “digitally certified email.”

These verified emails allow you to ensure that the email is from the brand and not a phishing attempt by a hacker. According the BIMI Group website“In order for the brand logo to display, the email must pass DMARC authentication checks, ensuring that the organization’s domain has not been impersonated.”

DMARC, which stands for “Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance”, is an email authentication policy and reporting protocol. DMARC protects against unauthorized use of domains by preventing direct domain impersonation in emails. It protects brands by ensuring that participating mailboxes only receive emails actually sent by or on behalf of a domain.
