Face ID is a great feature on the iPhone and if it’s not working on your device, there are a number of things you can try to get it working again.
This guide is designed to help you when your Face ID is not working on your iPhone. We hope these handy tips will get this feature working again on your handset. There are a number of different steps you can take to get Face ID working on your iPhone.
1. Check Face ID settings on your iPhone
The first thing to do when trying to figure out what’s wrong with Face ID is to check the feature settings on your iPhone.
You can check the Face ID settings on your handset by going to Settings > Face ID and password, you will then be asked to enter your password. Now check the settings and make sure Face ID is enabled.
There are different options you can use Face ID with, including iPhone Unlock, iTunes and App Store, Wallet and Apple Pay, Password AutoFill, and other apps. Make sure all the features and apps you want to use Face ID with are turned on. If this did not resolve the issue, proceed to step 2 below.
2. Check if anything is covering your front camera
It sounds obvious, but it’s a good idea to make sure something isn’t covering your front camera on the iPhone. It’s worth a quick clean of your iPhone screen to make sure nothing is obscuring the camera on the front, something like a fingerprint or smudge could be causing a problem with the camera. If that doesn’t work, skip to step 3 below.
3. Check if you have the latest iPhone software
Another thing you can try is to see if you have the latest iPhone software. You can do this from the settings app on your iPhone.
Go to Settings > General > Software update and check if a software update is available for your handset. If so, it is recommended that you install this update on your device. Once this is done and your handset has rebooted, you can try to see if that fixed the issue with Face ID. If that doesn’t work or a software update isn’t available, go to step 4 below.
4. Restart your iPhone
Another way to try to get Face ID working again is to restart your iPhone, this may help get Face ID working again.
If you have iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 13 or iPhone 13, hold the volume down button and the power button until the mute slider appears, you can now switch off the handset and restart it.
For iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, and 2nd and 3rd generation iPhone SE, hold the power button on the side until the power off slider appears.
On iPhone SE 1st generation, iPhone 5, or earlier iPhones, hold the power button on top until the power off slider appears. If that doesn’t work and your Face ID still doesn’t work on your iPhone, go to step 5.
5. Reset Face ID and set it up again
If none of the above steps worked, you can try resetting Face ID on your iPhone. To do this, go to Settings. Face ID & Passcode, enter your passcode, then select Reset Face ID. Your Face ID is now reset and you will need to set it up again on your device.
If none of the above tips work for your iPhone, there may be a hardware problem with your device and it may be a good idea to take it to an Apple Store or other repairer to see if it can be fixed.
