Apple’s latest iPhone SE was announced in 2020, and now there are reports of a new model launching in 2022. Here’s what’s known about the phone.
There are reports that Apple will announce a new iPhone SE model in 2022, and for fans of the series, that’s great news. The idea behind the iPhone SE is to provide a smaller and cheaper iPhone model. To keep the price low, Apple uses the design of an older phone, that’s why the first generation iPhone SE released in 2016 looks like the iPhone 5 2012 while the iPhone SE (2020) is next to impossible to be distinguished from the iPhone 8 released in 2017.
Apple already offers small iPhone models in the form of iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 13 Mini. Even though they rock larger 5.4-inch screens than the 4.7-inch ones on the iPhone SE models, both Mini models are smaller than the iPhone SE. However, they are priced much higher than the iPhone SE 2022, starting at just $399. The iPhone 12 Mini currently has a starting price of $599, while its successor costs $100 more.
Apple’s iPhone SE phone launch doesn’t seem to have a clear pattern – the first launched in 2016, and a 2nd-gen model followed in 2020 – which explains why there might be doubts about a new model coming two years after the previous one. However, some of the sources that reported that a new model will be launched this year are credible. So it’s safe to say that a new iPhone SE model is indeed coming, and it should come with improved features and maybe even a new name. However, the design will remain unchanged.
The next SE model is rumored to be called SE+ 5G and will have a 4.7″ LCD screen. Previously, the next SE model, SE3, will have either a 5.7″ or 6.1″ screen. It seems now that it will be 5.7″. May be launched in 2023 rather than 2024.

iPhone SE 3, iPhone SE (2022), iPhone SE+ 5G, or simply iPhone SE?
The new iPhone SE is reportedly slated for an early summer release with upgraded specs. There are no specific details yet except for a 4.7-inch LCD screen and 5G support, but a new processor, improved cameras with new features and hopefully a bigger battery to increase the addition of 5G are expected upgrades. Since the design is reported to be unchanged, it should also support Touch ID via a front-mounted fingerprint scanner.
Apple officially calls the 2020 model the iPhone SE, the same name as the original, but the device is informally called iPhone SE (2020) or iPhone SE 2 to avoid confusion. So what will the next model be called – iPhone SE 3 or iPhone SE (2022)? It might be neither, as the phone would launch as the iPhone SE+ 5G. Since the information is unconfirmed, consumers should take it with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, there are plausible reasons why Apple might not agree to it.
There is a good chance that the current model will be discontinued after or even before the announcement of the 3rd generation model, which means that Apple may again call this new model the iPhone SE. Also, while some of the upgrades planned for the new phone include 5G support, Apple has never been among brands to include the word “5Gin the name of a device. It didn’t when it announced its first 5G phone, the iPhone 12, so the possibility of it now is pretty low.
